Form follows function is a principle associated with modern architecture and industrial design in the 20th century. The principle is that the shape of a building or object should be primarily based upon its intended function or purpose.
Wainwright Building by Louis Sullivan
In the context of design professions form follows function seems like good sense but on closer examination it becomes problematic and open to interpretation. Linking the relationship between the form of an object and its intended purpose is a good idea for designers and architects, but it is not always by itself a complete design solution. Defining the precise meaning(s) of the phrase 'form follows function' opens a discussion of design integrity that remains an important, lively debate.[1

ooooooooooooo
ReplyDeleteits okay ....
ReplyDeletebt u r telling its use ...
we r here to find first what is form
According to me form is one of the basic element of elements of design.Form is the shape and structure of a dimensional element in a given composition.A form can be 2-dimensional,3-dimensional and can be a realistic, abstract or in between.form n shap are interrelated. Form is derived from the comdination of point, line, shape.
ReplyDeleteYa,to som extent its fyn to say that form is the element of elements of design but actually its not that...bcoz as far as i m concerned about it is that form is created wen elements nd principles of design are combined to support the function of piece.....
ReplyDeleteGood that it has started. Let me try the problem.

ReplyDeleteIt is working!!!!!! So no excuses from now onwards.
ReplyDeleteform is amongst one of the elements of design. it is created when two dimentional shape i.e.circle square is being given third dimention . and transformed into form like sphere ,cubeetc. in shott it means when xaxis & y axis are given z axis forms are created.
ReplyDeleteNow,I am taking a next step that is towards function.Function can be defined as the process or the way in which a form/object will work and perform.
ReplyDeleteAs I have come to know from an article a form follows function. Or stated another way, form should not dictate function.
Form and function in design are both as independent and interdependent as content, style, behavior and structure are in markup. That is to say, they influence each other, but they are different spectrum s altogether.
On the basis of above comment forms and functions are related to each other on the one or the other way but both have different properties.
ReplyDeleteaccording to todays class ...
ReplyDeleteboth forms and functions are related equally to each other
here fo0rm are the basic structure of the object where as function depends to the working property of the object..
where as a good form have both a good function and a asthetic value..
